POETRY OF LIFE
The ability to notice beauty, meaning and wonder in the everyday
Some people can smell spring in the air. Others notice nothing; nothing touches them.
I believe the difference is an intelligence: the capacity to be so captured by a moment, a mountain, a painting, a single sentence, that your concerns stop and everything else disappears.
Those who develop it take in more of the beauty the world offers, and their lives gain another dimension.
“I was standing in the back of an open truck, holding the rail as it climbed towards Tusheti, one of the most beautiful places in Georgia. And I remember thinking: I cannot believe I live in this world. That is Poetry of Life.
Not every moment of Poetry of Life is a peak experience; that is its highest expression. There are smaller ones too: a painting, a poem or a film that stops your life for a moment, and lets you enter another person’s universe.
I have seen the phrase used in discussions of art, but I believe Poetry of Life is an intelligence. Everyone has the capacity for it. For some, it is immense and always present. For others, lifestyle, society, community or upbringing have left it undeveloped.”
Why does Poetry of Life matter?
Because it pushes back your everyday anxieties: competition, finances, worries. In a moment of Poetry of Life, your concerns stop, and you become spacious.
Poetry of Life also helps us make meaning, even of tragedy, war and suffering. It is a meaning-making booster. And it makes us more compassionate.
Life differs in degree, as some live in safety and others in daily danger, but life itself is the same phenomenon for all of us: birth, death, illness, heartbreak. Our experiences are more similar than we think. We are all in this together.
Poetry of Life is the ability to peak-experience the world: to be so captured by a moment that the world stops, and all your senses are focused on that one experience.
Three dimensions of Poetry of Life
Wonder: seeing the world through another’s eyes
Wonder is not intellectual curiosity. It is emotional curiosity: recognising that every person experiences the world differently.
We say, I wish I could see the world through your eyes, but we never truly can. Art and poetry bridge that gap.
In The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann’s protagonist sees his friend’s heart on an X-ray screen and thinks: his big, kind heart is beating. It is a small sentence, but incredibly intimate. That is wonder.
Connection: Belonging to something larger
Poetry of Life is not only the admiration of nature. It is the experience of belonging to this world: the sense that you, the mountain, the tree and another human being share the same origin.
Its qualities are warmth and intimacy, feeling on the same wavelength as someone, sometimes without words. You belong together, but you also belong to something larger.
Meaning: Joy beyond happiness
Poetry of Life brings joy, which is different from happiness.
Someone can be happy but not joyful. Joy is when lightness and beauty suddenly capture you completely, and nothing else exists.
It is also present in nostalgia, a combination of grief and celebration: grief that a moment will never return, and gratitude that it happened. Without joy, it would only be grief.
Signs that Poetry of Life is underdeveloped
I do not think anyone lives entirely without it. But you may recognise some of these signs:
Nothing stops you. No landscape, painting or film makes your life pause, even for a moment.
You eat without tasting. Your attention is elsewhere, so you do not notice the food, its ingredients or its taste, and you feel no gratitude for it.
Everyday anxieties fill all the space. Competition, finances, worries: there is no room left for wonder.
You are happy at times, but rarely joyful. Joy is when lightness and beauty suddenly capture you completely; it rarely comes.
What changes when you develop Poetry of Life?
You feel joy more often.
Joy usually does not last long. But if you live consciously and recognise joy in small things, it comes more frequently.
You enter other people’s universes.
A painting is no longer just a painting; it becomes an entire universe that someone carries and tries to convey, and you are there, receiving it.
You feel connected, on the same wavelength as others, sometimes without words, and part of something larger.
Your memories carry joy as well as grief.
That is what makes nostalgia different from grief.
You pass it on.
Poetry of Life is contagious, and people recognise it immediately. At the end of my first novel, I wrote a sentence. Years later, someone posted it online, and another person commented: “When I read this, my heart stopped.”
Joy is the first thing that comes when you know yourself, so Poetry of Life and Self Intelligence feed each other. Its warmth, and the sense of being on the same wavelength as someone, sometimes without words, are at the heart of Interpersonal Intelligence; so is the sense that you, the tree and another human being share the same origin. And in its deepest form, the sense that we all come from the same universe and return to it, Poetry of Life touches Mystical Intelligence.
How we work together:
Everyone has the capacity for Poetry of Life, and everyone can develop it. Poetry of Life is deeply personal, and it is also contagious. Together, we look for where it already lives in your days, and how to make room for more of it, through slowing down, paying attention and using all your senses. In everyday actions, you can ignite it.
